It is with great sadness that I have to inform you of the passing today of our dear friend Dorothy Downes after a long battle with cancer.
Dorothy was a long-time member of Anchor Ramblers. She was greatly involved in the club as social secretary for a period and supported her husband George as club chairman.
As walker she had many adventures including some long-distance walks such as the West Highland Way (96 miles). She also managed to climb Ben Nevis for charity. As she became older, she was a great advocate of having a D walk at Anchor which has proved to be a success.
Throughout her later year’s she did a tremendous amount of voluntary work for Pensioners Link. She always tried to help others and will be greatly missed.

Anchor Ramblers Spring Newsletter Issue 1/2022
At the AGM we promised to keep you informed about the club’s situation throughout the year. This short Newsletter will endeavour to do so.
By the end of May, we will have completed circa half of our monthly walks after this Sundays walk at Chirk.
The Christmas walk at Settle went well, although attendance was poor. Unfortunately, this year we didn’t have a meal due to Covid. This was followed in January with the cancellation of the Hayfield walk at short notice due to Covid Omicron.
The walks programme has been varied with trips to some less recently visited places such as Rainow and Shap. We have stayed with the format of B, C, and D walks adopted during Covid. This seems acceptable to all our members. Another change has been made based on the new walk levels this being the bringing forward of the time of return journeys home to 5.30 p.m. Most members seem to prefer to get home a little bit earlier.
May we thank all our walk leaders this year so far. Sometimes we forget their efforts in preparing the walk’s.
We have an extremely small team of leaders who do a brilliant job. If you fancy leading a walk let us know as the committee members will always be prepared to help.
Our new coach provider Memory Lane have proved to be a great success based on the member feedback received. The coaches are far more comfortable and the cleanliness together with driver service and assistance far better. The provision of a toilet on all journeys at no extra cost is a great benefit to our members.
As agreed, when we chose the coach and membership fees for this year at the AGM we said we would review and publish the financial situation at half year. You can see this below: –
You will see that only ONE walk shows a surplus and that the total loss to date is circa -£500.00. despite this we will carry on for the rest of the year with the same coach fare i.e., £14.00.
PLEASE HOWEVER, TRY TO HELP BY JOINING US WHENEVER POSSIBLE!!
Currently we have only 48 paid up members of the club which make it nigh on impossible to fill our coach trips. Can we ask members who have not yet paid to please pay ASAP.
Having said this, we have been pleased to receive many guests and potential new members. If you are not a member, please remember your attendance is very welcome. Should you enjoy our company please think about joining our friendly club Anchor Ramblers.
